Box breathing for stress relief

Box breathing is about as simple as a breathing technique gets: four seconds in, four second hold, four seconds out, four second hold, repeat. The “box” name comes from the fact that all four parts are equal length — easy to picture, easy to follow without counting on your fingers.

Why an even, structured rhythm helps

Under stress, breathing tends to get faster and shallower without you deciding that it should — it’s an automatic response. Deliberately switching to a slow, structured rhythm is one of the more direct ways to counter that in the moment, since breathing is one of the few automatic body functions you can consciously override.

The structure itself seems to matter too. Box breathing gives your attention something concrete and simple to hold onto — count to four, four times, on repeat — which can be easier to stick with during a stressful moment than a vaguer instruction like “just relax.”

How to actually do it

  1. Sit comfortably, or stand if that’s what the moment calls for.
  2. Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 seconds.
  3. Hold gently for 4 seconds — no straining.
  4. Breathe out slowly for 4 seconds.
  5. Hold again for 4 seconds before the next round.

Four rounds is a reasonable starting point — enough to actually shift how you feel, short enough to fit into a two-minute gap between meetings.

When it’s most useful

Box breathing works well right before something that needs focus (a hard conversation, a presentation, a tricky bug) and equally well as a quick reset after something stressful just happened. It doesn’t require you to name or process what’s stressing you out — it just gives your nervous system a different signal to respond to.

Try it guided

Reading the steps is one thing; following an actual paced animation is easier the first few times. BreathCheck’s box breathing exercise guides you through it visually, with the pacing built in — no counting required.
